eSIM, local SIM card or roaming – which is better?
Before every trip abroad the same question comes up: stay online via an eSIM, a local prepaid SIM on site, or your home provider’s roaming? We compare the three options by effort, price and speed.

When is an eSIM worth it?
For most travellers the eSIM is the best compromise: you buy it conveniently before the trip, activate it via QR code and are online from landing – no card swapping, no shop hunting. You need an eSIM-capable device.
When a local SIM card?
A local prepaid SIM can be even cheaper for very long stays or extremely high data needs – but it costs time on site, sometimes an ID registration, and you swap the card (home number offline).
When roaming?

- EU trip with a good home plan: roaming often suffices

Real-world decision examples
For a ten-day multi-stop tour, a pre-installed eSIM is usually the simplest option. During a six-month stay involving housing, banking and local contacts, a local SIM with a phone number may fit better. Groups should also check whether one large plan permits hotspot sharing or each traveller needs a separate profile.
Differences hidden in the terms
Inspect activation deadlines, identity registration, cancellation, top-ups, hotspot rules and the definition of unlimited. Check whether taxes and connection fees are included. Support for a local plan may be available only in the local language.
