Buying an eSIM: what should I check?
Anyone looking to buy an eSIM will find dozens of packages with different allowances and validity periods. The cheapest headline price rarely tells the whole story. The plan must fit your device, route and usage. This checklist covers everything from compatibility to activation.
1. Check compatibility and carrier lock
Your phone must support eSIM and be carrier-unlocked. An EID in the device information is a useful indicator. Check our compatible device list, especially for models that differ by sales region.
2. Choose the correct destination
A country eSIM is normally cheaper for one destination. A regional plan is more convenient across several borders. Read the full country list rather than relying on the product name.
Popular destinations include:
3. Estimate data realistically
Maps, messaging and email may need only 5–10 GB for two weeks. Social media, video and hotspot use increase that quickly. A fixed package is often better value for predictable use; unlimited can suit heavy or uncertain usage.
4. Read validity correctly
A 15-day package does not automatically fit a 14-day holiday. Find out when the clock starts: on installation, first network connection or a fixed date.
5. Compare networks and speed
"5G ready" does not guarantee 5G everywhere. Coverage depends on the local network partner, location and device. Strong 4G is sufficient for maps, calls and most streaming.
6. Inspect unlimited fair-use rules
Unlimited may mean full speed only up to a daily threshold. Check:
- daily high-speed allowance
- speed after throttling
- reset time
- hotspot allowance
- excluded applications
Read our unlimited eSIM guide for the details.
7. Hotspot, calls and SMS
Many travel eSIMs are data-only. Calls then work through WhatsApp, FaceTime or another internet service. A local number is included only when explicitly stated. Check tethering support before relying on the plan for a laptop.
8. Installation and activation
After checkout you normally receive a QR code and manual activation data. Install over Wi-Fi before departure while respecting the activation policy. Keep the details available offline. Our installation guide walks through every step.
9. Secure roaming settings
Select the travel eSIM for mobile data and disable data roaming on the home SIM. The travel line itself may require roaming because it connects through a partner network.
10. Support and refunds
Check support channels and refund rules for unused and already installed packages. When asking for help, provide screenshots of line status, APN and errors, but never post the complete QR code publicly.
Quick choice by trip
| Trip | Sensible option |
|---|---|
| Weekend in one country | 3–5 GB country eSIM |
| One or two weeks | 10–20 GB country or regional plan |
| Multi-country road trip | regional eSIM |
| Heavy video or laptop work | large allowance or unlimited |
| World trip | global eSIM or selected regional plans |
Verdict
A strong buying decision starts with the phone and ends with the activation policy. Use the plan finder, compare the services actually included and install in good time. That keeps an international eSIM convenient from checkout to touchdown.
