Avoid roaming charges: how to save abroad in 2026

Why roaming outside the EU is expensive
Within the EU, "roam like at home" applies – you browse at your domestic rates. But as soon as you leave the EU (USA, Turkey, Thailand, Dubai …), your provider’s roaming tariffs kick in – often several euros per megabyte. Even brief map usage can quickly cost triple digits.
The biggest cost traps
- Data roaming accidentally left switched on
- Automatic app updates and cloud backups in the background
- Streaming & navigation without a data plan
How to avoid roaming costs
- Buy an eSIM before you travel – a local or regional data plan instead of roaming.
- Turn off data roaming on your home SIM, use the eSIM profile for data.
- Keep your home number for calls/SMS, data over the eSIM.
- Choose the plan by need – with the plan finder by country and trip length.
Example
Instead of unpredictable roaming charges, a mySIM24 eSIM lets you pay a fixed price up front – transparent and with no bill shock. Plans are available for over 130 countries.

EU roaming still has limits
"Roam like at home" generally applies in the EU and EEA, but fair-use policies, prolonged use abroad and special networks create exceptions. On ships and aircraft, a phone may connect to satellite or onboard networks that are not covered by EU roaming. Disable mobile data there.
Settings before departure
- Restrict background updates and cloud backup to Wi-Fi.
- Download offline maps, tickets and important documents.
- Install and clearly label the travel eSIM.
- Disable mobile data and data roaming on the home SIM.
- Set a data warning or limit on the device.
Keep your home number
Dual SIM keeps the usual number active for incoming texts such as login codes. Conventional calls and outgoing texts may still incur charges. Messaging apps use the eSIM data connection.
After the trip
Select the home SIM for data again and turn off the travel profile. Delete it only when you are certain it is no longer needed; some profiles or remaining allowances stay valid.
Compare a fixed package in the plan finder. For a multi-country itinerary, use the international eSIM guide.
Common cost traps outside the EU
Even brief background connections can be expensive under usage-based roaming. Photo backup, app updates, video autoplay and automatic mobile fallback from weak Wi-Fi are common causes. Voicemail access or a conventional call may also cost extra independently of the data package.
Monitor roaming during the trip
Check which line supplies mobile data in SIM settings. Ask the home carrier for a roaming or data limit and review the phone counter daily. Use airplane mode on ferries, cruise ships and aircraft because onboard networks can be exceptionally expensive.
Should roaming be enabled on the travel eSIM? Often yes, because it connects through partner networks. The crucial setting is keeping data roaming off on the home SIM.
Is hotel Wi-Fi always safe? No. Use encrypted websites, avoid sensitive activity on open networks and update apps before departure.
