Activate an eSIM QR code: setup and troubleshooting guide

What is an eSIM QR code?
An eSIM QR code contains the encrypted installation details for a digital SIM profile. Scanning it lets the phone download the operator profile. It is not an ordinary website link: treat it as a personal credential, do not share it publicly and keep the order details available offline.
Setup requires an eSIM-compatible device, reliable Wi-Fi and an unlocked phone. Many activation codes are single-use. Do not delete an installed profile simply because it shows no service before your trip.
Scan an eSIM QR code on iPhone
- Open Settings → Mobile Service/Cellular → Add eSIM.
- Choose “Use QR Code” and scan it from another screen or a printout.
- Confirm that you want to add the mobile plan.
- Label the lines clearly, for example “Home” and “Travel”.
- Select the travel eSIM for mobile data when you arrive.
If the code is stored on the same iPhone, recent iOS versions may open it from Mail or Photos. Otherwise enter the supplied SM-DP+ address and activation code manually. Our iPhone eSIM guide explains the line settings in detail.
Activate the QR code on Android
Menu names vary. On Samsung, the route is generally Settings → Connections → SIM manager → Add eSIM. Google Pixel usually uses Network & internet → SIMs → Add SIM. Scan the code and confirm the download.
Choose the new eSIM for mobile data. Disable automatic data switching so the phone cannot silently fall back to the home SIM when reception changes. Your plan instructions will say whether roaming must be enabled on the travel profile.
Why is the QR code not working?
- Already used: check whether the profile is already listed in SIM settings.
- Invalid or expired: compare the order and destination device before requesting a replacement.
- No internet: profile download normally requires Wi-Fi.
- Unsupported or locked phone: dial *#06# and look for an EID, then check the carrier lock.
- No service before departure: this is normal when partner networks exist only at the destination.
If restarting does not help, toggle airplane mode for 20 seconds and check the data line, roaming setting and APN. See the complete iPhone and Android installation guide for a step-by-step checklist.
When should I install the eSIM?
Install at home over Wi-Fi, but verify when validity begins. Some plans start at the first destination-network connection, while others start on installation. Use the plan finder to compare packages and the travel data guide to estimate the right allowance.
