Using SIM and eSIM at the Same Time: Separate Data, Calls and SMS

Yes, on a supported dual-SIM device, you can use a physical SIM and an eSIM at the same time. Other models allow two active eSIMs. Check the specific combination for your device variant in the compatibility overview and with the manufacturer.
Stored does not mean active
A phone can store multiple eSIM profiles without using all of them at the same time. Dual SIM also does not automatically mean that two mobile data connections work in parallel. On many devices, you select a preferred data line; behavior during a phone call and automatic switching depend on the model, software and provider.
For travel, a clear division is practical: the travel eSIM provides internet, while the home line remains active for your familiar number when needed. Whether you can make calls or receive SMS on it, and at what cost, should be checked with your home provider.
Setting up the lines
- Check the activation start date and compatibility of the travel package.
- Install it at the recommended time with a stable internet connection.
- Give the lines names such as “Home” and “Travel”.
- Explicitly select “Travel” for mobile data.
- Set the default line for calls and SMS separately.
- Check roaming and automatic mobile data switching for each line.
The installation guide walks you through setup. For Apple menus, there is also the guide Set up and switch eSIM on iPhone. Samsung and Pixel use different menu labels; the basic principle of separate tasks remains the same.
Avoiding roaming charges
Disable data roaming for your home SIM if you do not want to use its data plan abroad. Also turn off automatic mobile data switching if your device offers this option. Check the selected line again after a system notification or change instead of relying on the default setting.
With a travel eSIM, data roaming may be required for the internet connection. Follow its instructions. The switch on the travel line is separate from whether your home line is roaming at a cost. Traditional calls, voicemail and SMS may have their own international terms even when data roaming is turned off.
An example while on holiday
You want to use the travel eSIM for navigation and remain reachable on your existing number. To do this, select the travel profile as the data line and keep the home line active, provided its terms are suitable. An SMS sent to your home number requires that line to be reachable; WhatsApp can use the travel line's internet connection.
If you do not need any mobile services from the home line at all, you can temporarily disable it. First check whether you expect verification codes or important calls. Disabling a line is different from deleting an eSIM profile.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to remove the physical SIM? Normally not on a suitable dual-SIM device. Check the supported combination for your model.
Can I make calls on both lines at the same time? This depends on the device and provider. Two active lines do not guarantee unrestricted simultaneous availability during a call.
What should I change back after the trip? Select the home line for mobile data again and check the default settings. Delete a travel profile only once it is no longer needed and its reuse conditions have been clarified.
