eSIM or Pocket WiFi: Which one suits your trip?

A travel eSIM is often a good fit for people travelling with their own compatible smartphone. Pocket WiFi can make sense when several devices need to share one mobile connection. In the plan finder, you can first determine your trip’s data needs and then compare the options.
What is the practical difference?
An eSIM is a mobile network profile installed on a suitable device. A Pocket WiFi device is a portable mobile router that shares its data connection over Wi-Fi. The router also needs a suitable plan; its Wi-Fi does not replace mobile coverage at your location.
| Criterion | Travel eSIM in a smartphone | Pocket WiFi |
|---|---|---|
| Devices | An unlocked, eSIM-compatible phone is required | Wi-Fi-capable end devices and a suitable router are required |
| Travelling together | Sharing via hotspot, where permitted | Several devices connect to the router’s Wi-Fi |
| Separate outings | Each individual profile remains independent | Connection is available only within the router’s range |
| Power | Uses the smartphone battery | An additional router needs charging |
| Organisation | Digital delivery and installation | Depending on the offer: purchase, collection or return |
Travelling alone or as a group?
For a solo traveller, an additional device may be unnecessary. For a family travelling together with several tablets, however, a router can be practical. What matters is whether everyone actually stays together: whoever takes the router to the beach also takes the shared connection with them.
A smartphone hotspot is an alternative. Whether your plan allows tethering and which limits apply is stated in the relevant offer. A laptop may use it to start large updates or cloud synchronisation. Therefore, include the usage of all connected devices in your calculation, not just that of the phone.
Compare total costs, not the daily price
For the same travel period, compare data allowance, possible throttling, included countries and speed. With a router, device purchase, rental, shipping, deposit, return or loss terms may be relevant depending on the contract. These costs are not the same with every provider and should not be assumed as a general rule.
With an eSIM, also check when activation starts and whether it is tied to a device. The validity period may begin at purchase, installation or the first supported network connection. The compatibility check should be completed before purchase. A cheaper plan will not make an unsupported smartphone eSIM-compatible.
Which option is more reliable?
The form factor alone does not indicate better coverage. Both solutions depend on the network used, the plan, the device and the location. For a road trip, check the actual route and save important maps offline. Neither an eSIM nor Pocket WiFi guarantees internet in a coverage dead zone.
If you need a local phone number, check the mobile services offered separately. A data router or a data-only eSIM does not automatically meet this requirement. The comparison eSIM or local SIM complements this decision.
Frequently asked questions
Is Pocket WiFi always more expensive? No. Compare specific total offers for the same needs and travel period.
Can I provide data to several devices with an eSIM too? Via a hotspot, provided the device and plan allow it. Connected devices share the data allowance and available speed.
What is better for separate outings? Separate mobile connections provide independence. A shared router only helps within its Wi-Fi range.
