eSIM on iPhone: set up, switch and troubleshoot

Which iPhones support eSIM?
eSIM iPhone is one of the largest search topics in digital connectivity. Apple generally supports eSIM from iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max and iPhone XR onwards. iPhone SE models from the second generation also support it. Hardware variants can differ by sales region, so an EID and an unlocked device are the most reliable checks.
Open Settings → General → About and look for an EID. If it is missing, that device variant may not support eSIM. You can also use our compatibility checker.
Add an eSIM with a QR code
- Connect the iPhone to reliable Wi-Fi.
- Open Settings → Mobile Service → Add eSIM.
- Select Use QR Code and scan the code from your order email.
- Confirm that you want to add the mobile plan.
- Give the line a clear label such as "Travel" or "USA".
- Select the eSIM as your mobile data line.
A QR code can often be installed only once. Do not delete the profile simply because it has no service before your trip; that is expected when the destination network is out of range.
For the same steps with additional setup guidance and Android notes, see the complete installation guide.
Install directly on the same iPhone
If your provider supports a universal link or Apple's direct installation, open the link on the iPhone and confirm Add eSIM. If you only have a QR image on that device, display it on another screen or use the manual activation details supplied with the order.
Configure dual SIM safely
Dual SIM keeps your home number and travel data active together:
- Default voice line: your home SIM
- Mobile data: the travel eSIM
- Allow mobile data switching: off to avoid accidental charges
- Home SIM data roaming: off outside your domestic allowance
- Travel eSIM data roaming: follow the plan instructions
WhatsApp remains connected to the existing number unless you deliberately change the number inside the app.
Switch between eSIM profiles
Open Settings → Mobile Service, select the profile and enable Turn On This Line. Then choose the line under Mobile Data. Switching does not delete the profile or consume extra data by itself.
Fix common eSIM problems
"Unable to add eSIM"
Check Wi-Fi, carrier lock status and iOS updates. If the QR code was already used, you may need a replacement activation or the manual SM-DP+ details.
No service after landing
Enable the line and the roaming setting required for that travel plan. Turn airplane mode on for 20 seconds. If it still does not connect, leave network selection on automatic and restart the iPhone.
Data is unusually slow
Check your usage and any fair-use threshold. Coverage can also vary inside buildings or in rural areas.
Personal Hotspot is missing
Not every package permits tethering. When it is supported, missing APN settings can be the cause. Only use the values provided with your order.
Before deleting a profile
Removing an eSIM is different from turning it off. The original QR code may be invalid after deletion. For a temporary pause, disable the line. Delete it only after the trip or when support asks you to do so.
Choose a travel eSIM
Select a destination and trip length in the plan finder. Heavy users should compare a fixed allowance with an unlimited eSIM. Before buying, confirm that the specific iPhone supports eSIM and is carrier-unlocked. Install before departure and start mobile data according to the activation policy.
