How much data does WhatsApp use while travelling?

There is no reliable single MB-per-hour figure for WhatsApp: a few text messages are different from a video call or sending large videos. In the plan finder, therefore, plan based on how you use it rather than on a blanket number for the app.
What usage counts towards mobile data consumption?
Messages, photos, voice messages, videos and calls transferred over a mobile connection use data. Data may be used both when sending and receiving. Automatic media downloads and background activity should also be included in your test. Wi-Fi usage, on the other hand, does not count against your travel eSIM's mobile data allowance.
A WhatsApp call is not a regular mobile phone call covered by an included calling allowance. It uses the internet connection. With a data-only package, this is useful when choosing a plan, but it does not indicate whether the app is available at your destination without restrictions.
Measure your own usage
At the start of a typical day of use, note WhatsApp's mobile data usage in your system settings. On iPhone, you can find app usage under Mobile Data; on Pixel, go to Network & internet → SIMs → App data usage. Other Android manufacturers may use different menus.
Use WhatsApp deliberately in the way you expect to use it while travelling. Then note the final reading and calculate the difference. Check that the selected measurement period is correct. A counter running since months is not a daily measurement. A short test involving text messages only does not reflect daily video calls.
Calculation example for seven days
Calculation assumption, not a measured WhatsApp standard: Your own test shows 120 MB of mobile WhatsApp data per day. For seven days, that would be 120 × 7 = 840 MB. If you allow an example 20 percent buffer, this comes to 1,008 MB, or around 1 GB using decimal conversion.
This calculation covers WhatsApp only. Maps, browsers, social media and system services are additional. Also check how the booked package displays GB and usage. The data guide can help with overall planning.
What saves data?
Where possible, send larger videos over Wi-Fi and check automatic media downloads in your version of the app. During long calls, an audio call instead of video can reduce usage; without measuring, it is not possible to state a fixed saving reliably. Also check whether backups and photo transfers are allowed over mobile data.
Keep groups with lots of media in mind: even if you write very little, downloaded files can increase usage. Repeat your test after a significant change in usage or settings.
Frequently asked questions
Is 1 GB enough for WhatsApp alone? That depends on media, calls and the length of your trip. Compare your measured daily profile with the available allowance.
Are video calls on Unlimited plans always available at unrestricted speed? Not necessarily. A fair-use rule may reduce speeds after a high-speed allowance; the FAQ refers to the specific plan terms.
Why do my phone and provider figures not match exactly? Devices count data themselves; billing periods and measurement methods may differ. The provider's display is authoritative for your remaining allowance.
