Use WhatsApp with a travel eSIM and keep your number

Yes, an already configured WhatsApp account can continue to work via your travel eSIM’s internet connection. Selecting a different data line does not automatically change your registered WhatsApp number. In the plan finder, you can find a package for your travel destinations.
Keep the data line and account number separate
The travel eSIM provides mobile internet. Your account number, on the other hand, is the number under which WhatsApp was set up. As long as you continue using the existing account, switching the internet connection does not require a new account number. Only use “Change Number” if you actually want to change your account number.
A data-only package does not include regular SMS or mobile voice service. WhatsApp messages and WhatsApp calls are internet services; they use data from your package or Wi-Fi. Whether they work at your destination may also depend on local network and service restrictions. An eSIM does not guarantee unrestricted availability of every app.
Prepare before you travel
Open WhatsApp while you are still at home and check the registered number. Make sure you will continue to have control of that number. Verification may be required if you register again, change devices, or undergo a security check. A data eSIM does not replace access to the registered number.
Check with your home provider how you can receive calls or SMS messages in your destination country and which conditions apply. The guide on TAN SMS and your home number abroad helps you prepare for this separate accessibility. Do not share verification codes with support chats or any other person.
Set up your phone at your destination
Explicitly select the travel eSIM for mobile data and enable its data roaming if the installation instructions require it. Turn off data roaming and automatic data switching for your home line. This keeps responsibility for the data line clear. The FAQ explains which services depend on which plan.
First test a website, then send a WhatsApp message. If the internet does not work in general, the cause is not necessarily WhatsApp. Check the validity period, remaining data allowance, and included country. An app issue alone is not a reason to delete the eSIM profile or register WhatsApp again.
Manage data usage consciously
Short text messages, photos, videos, and video calls use different amounts of data. A universally applicable figure per WhatsApp minute would be misleading. Instead, measure the app’s mobile data usage over a representative period in your system settings and plan based on your actual usage.
Whenever possible, move large media transfers and backups to Wi-Fi. Check automatic media downloads in your version of the app. Remember that groups may receive media even when you send very little yourself. Background transfers should therefore also be included in your planning.
Frequently asked questions
Does WhatsApp need a phone number in the travel data plan? For an existing account, the internet connection alone may be sufficient. Any required verification relates to the registered account number.
Will my number change if I switch the data SIM? Selecting a data line does not automatically change the WhatsApp account number.
Are WhatsApp calls free? They use internet data. Costs depend on the data connection used; regular mobile calls are separate.
