Travel eSIM with a phone number: understanding calls and SMS correctly
mySIM24 Redaktion · Published 10/11/2026 · Updated 10/11/2026 · 3 min read

A travel eSIM does not automatically come with a usable phone number for calls and SMS. Many packages include data only. With offers that include voice and SMS, the specifically listed services are what matter. In the Plan Finder, start with your travel destination and then compare the package details.
Three connections that are easy to confuse
| Connection | What it is used for | What you should check |
|---|---|---|
| Travel eSIM with data | Internet, messaging apps, internet calls | Countries, data allowance, validity period, app availability |
| Home SIM | Your existing mobile number, calls, SMS | Your home provider's international terms |
| Travel eSIM with voice service | Explicitly included mobile services | Phone number, call destinations, SMS direction and limits |
A technically assigned identifier is not proof of a publicly reachable phone number. Rely on the service description, not on a number field in your device settings.
What does “Incoming Text” mean on the Vodafone plan?
For the available Vodafone package with 25 GB, “Unlimited Talk” and “Incoming Text”, Incoming Text means receiving SMS messages. It does not promise outgoing SMS. Nor should you interpret “Unlimited Talk” as free calls to every country: check the included call destinations, terms of use and listed countries for the specific package.
Coverage applies only in the stated countries. The Vodafone name alone does not mean worldwide use or a German phone number. Check prices and availability on the current plan page. If a service you need is not clearly confirmed there, clarify it before purchasing.
Can my regular number remain active?
On a compatible dual-SIM device, your home line can remain active while the travel eSIM provides mobile data. Choose both functions deliberately in your settings. Disable data roaming and automatic data switching for the home SIM if you want to avoid its data roaming.
Calls and SMS on the home line still follow its own plan. Receiving calls, outgoing calls, voicemail and Wi-Fi Calling may be treated differently. A travel eSIM does not change these contract terms. The FAQ explains the basic separation.
WhatsApp and TAN SMS are not the same thing
A WhatsApp call uses internet data. By contrast, a standard SMS used to sign in to a bank is sent to the number registered with that bank. For existing accounts, it is therefore important to keep that number reachable where your home plan allows it. A new travel phone number does not automatically replace it.
Plan your accessibility before departure. The guide on TAN SMS and your home number describes the preparation. Never share verification codes with third parties, and for banking access rely only on procedures approved by your bank.
Frequently asked questions
Do regular calls work with a data package? Only through the travel eSIM if voice service is included. Internet calls are a separate app feature.
Do incoming SMS mean unlimited SMS? No. Receiving and sending are different services.
Can I call anywhere with an included number? Only the explicitly described call destinations are covered. Check the terms before making a call.
