Google Maps: Plan data usage for navigation on the go

Google Maps data usage depends on which maps and additional information are loaded. A fixed number of MB per kilometre is therefore not a reliable basis for choosing a plan. Plan all of your travel internet with the plan finder and treat navigation as just one part of it.
What does Google Maps load while you’re out and about?
A new map area, photos of places, search results and route information are different types of data transfers. Maps that have already been loaded can affect usage differently from an area opened for the first time. A short, familiar journey is therefore not a good test for a long road trip through unfamiliar regions.
The selected view also matters: someone who opens lots of images and place information uses the app differently from someone who simply follows a prepared route. GPS location determination and loading online information should not be treated as the same thing.
Prepare offline maps effectively
Download the areas you need in advance over Wi-Fi, where Google offers this feature at your destination. The planned driving route must be within the saved area. Before you leave, check that the maps are still up to date and have actually been saved on your phone.
Offline maps do not include, among other things, current traffic data and alternative traffic routes; public transport, cycling and walking routes are also limited or unavailable. An offline map is therefore an addition to travel planning, not a complete replacement for every online feature. Save important addresses and booking information separately as well.
Test your travel needs
Note Google Maps’ mobile data usage before and after a typical session. Deliberately test a new area using views, searches and navigation similar to what you will use on holiday. Repeat the test with a prepared offline area if you want to use this approach. Do not mix up the Wi-Fi download with mobile data used later.
Example using your own assumption: Suppose your test shows 35 MB per travel day. Over 14 days, that is 490 MB. An example 20 percent buffer brings this to 588 MB. These figures are freely chosen calculation assumptions, not measurements from Google. Your own test may produce very different results.
Navigation is only one part of the package
Messaging, ride-hailing apps, tickets, photos and entertainment are added to navigation. Therefore, do not choose your entire data package based on this one example alone. The guide to travel data allowances shows you how to add up the different types of usage.
For multi-stop trips, also consider transit countries, plan duration and possible coverage gaps. The FAQ explains why the country booked and the specific plan terms are crucial. A large data allowance does not create coverage where there is no supported mobile signal.
Frequently asked questions
Is navigation with offline maps completely data-free? Offline maps reduce the need for data, but online features used at the same time and other apps may still consume mobile data.
Can I download offline maps everywhere? No. Availability is limited depending on the region. Check your actual destination in the app.
Should I book Unlimited just for navigation? Not as a general rule. What matters is your total usage, especially media and hotspot use, as well as the duration.
